Dr. Archibald Newlands was a dermatologist who had a practice in New York City called Newlands Skin Care. His wife was also a dermatologist at the same practice.

Background[]

Newlands had an affair with Brianna Morris and she became pregnant with his child. Because he already had a wife and two daughters, after she threatened to file a paternity suit against him, he snuck into her apartment, where he then paralyzed her with drugs from his office, forced her to give birth to their daughter Emily Rose, and then suffocated her to death.

Newlands also killed Emily by allowing her to bleed to death via her unbilical cord. He then cleaned up the crime scene and dumped the deceased baby in a storm drain.

Serendipity[]

Manhattan Special Victims Unit detectives suspected Newlands in the death of Brianna Morris and her newborn daughter who was discovered by workers. Morris had been preparing to file a paternity lawsuit against him, and she also had been drugged with drugs he had access to. He offered to take a paternity test, which showed that he was not the father. Unbeknownst to anyone, however, prior to the test, Newlands had implanted a tube of blood he obtained from his wife's practice in order to beat the test. He also lied to his wife that he cut himself by accident.

He did not know, however, that the blood belonged to a pedophilic serial rapist, and he was subsequently arrested when the police discovered this. Unable to admit to his deception and innocence in the child rapes without admitting to his guilt in the Morris case, Newlands did not show up at his trial and eventually decided to tell his lawyer, Trevor Langan, the truth and then flee the country afterwards.

Before he could, though, Newlands was subsequently shot and killed by the real rapist, Peter Nestler, who tracked him down in an attempt to close the case and draw attention away from him. However, Newlands's autopsy revealed the scar of the area he placed the tube in, which led Detectives Stabler and Benson to realize his guilt in the Morris murders but not the child rapes. They also went to his widow, and with her help, they discovered that Nestler was the true rapist, tracked him down, and arrested him before he could harm another victim. Nestler was charged Newlands's murder, among other things, and executed for his crimes.
