The Republic of Chile is a South American country occupying a long, narrow strip of land between the Andes mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

In 1973, a CIA-sponsored coup d'état lead to the violent overthrow of the socialist government. President Salvador Allende committed suicide and was succeeded by Augusto Pinochet, installing a military junta. Colonel Emilio Pantoya of the Chilean Army and Director of the National Intelligence Directory, was responsible for the torture and murders of many socialists in Chile, including Jason Whitman, an American citizen.
