Fernando Salva was the prime suspect in the carjacking murder of teacher Maureen Rankin. Despite an audio recording of himself committing the crime being excluded as evidence in his murder trial, he was convicted of murder in the second degree. The tape was subsequently admitted into evidence in his sentencing hearing, thereby sentencing Salva to 25 years to life imprisonment. His fiancée and co-conspirator, Anna Galvez, who was previously implicated in the crime, was cleared of all charges.
