In the criminal justice system, the people are represented by two separate, yet equally important, groups: the police who investigate crime and the District Attorneys who prosecute the offenders.
New York City Police Department[]
The NYPD has primary responsibilities in law enforcement and investigation within the five boroughs of New York City. The NYPD has a broad array of specialized services, and has been divided in several precincts, divisions and units.

Manhattan District Attorney's office[]
A District Attorney (D.A.) is the title of the local public official who represents the government in the prosecution of alleged criminals. The D.A. is the highest officeholder in the jurisdiction's legal department and supervises a staff of Assistant District Attorneys. The current D.A. for the Manhattan District Attorney's office is Jack McCoy. The D.A.'s office has it's own investigation unit.
