The State of Hawaii is a Pacific Ocean state of the United States of America, gaining statehood in 1959, the last of which to become a state. Hawaii is a tropical paradise known for beautiful beaches, luaus, girls in hula skirts, fire dancers and Pearl Harbor. Hawaii is the birthplace of President Barack Obama.
On December 7, 1941, the US Naval Base at Pearl Harbor was attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. 19 ships were damaged or sunk, including all 8 battleships, 347 US aircraft were damaged or destroyed and 2,403 Americans killed. 29 Japanese planes were shot down and 5 midget submarines sunk, with one of the submariners captured, the first Japanese prisoner of war in American captivity in World War II. The next day, after President Franklin Roosevelt delivered his famous "Infamy Speech", the US declared war on Japan and entering World War II.
