Development[]

On September 4, 2018, NBC announced that it had given an 13-episode order of the latest installment of the franchise entitled Law & Order: Hate Crimes.

Law & Order: Hate Crimes is based on New York's actual Hate Crimes Task Force, the second-oldest bias-based task force in the U.S. The unit, which pledges to uphold a zero tolerance policy against discrimination of any kind, works under the NYPD's real Special Victims Unit and often borrows SVU detectives to assist in their investigations.

The new Law & Order series was initially meant to be introduced as a planted spin-off from SVU, with the first incarnation of the new unit initially meant to appear in the latter part of SVU's twentieth season. In March 2019, NBC confirmed that Law & Order: Hate Crimes had been delayed and would not be airing in the 2019-20 season. An official air date is yet to be confirmed, therefore putting production on an indefinite hiatus.

Warren Leight, who was developing Law & Order: Hate Crimes before he returned as showrunner of SVU for its latest season, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter's Top 5 Podcast and confirmed that the project still exists and is aimed for streaming. In June 2020, it was reported the series will be streamed on Peacock instead of being aired on NBC due to language concerns and content matter that would be inappropriate as well as unsuitable for broadcast television. A premiere date is to be confirmed.

Law & Order: Hate Crimes is a Wolf Entertainment production in association with Universal Television. Dick Wolf and Warren Leight are creators and executive producers. Arthur Forney and Peter Jankowski are executive producers.
