Olivia Benson is Elliot Stabler's partner and a detective in the Manhattan Special Victims Unit.
Olivia Benson was born in 1967, the product of a one-night stand between Serena Benson, who was at the time working in a cafeteria at the Manhattan Technical Institute, and a food salesman named Joseph Hollister. Serena was ashamed at herself, as she had slept with Joe while drunk, and later learned that he was married, and for years, she told Olivia that she had been raped by an unknown assailant. It was only after her death in 2000 that Olivia started to learn the truth. ("Florida")
Relations between Olivia and her mother were strained. Serena drank constantly, and in her teenage years, Olivia sought comfort in the arms of an older man who happened to be one of Serena's students. The two fell deeply in love, and when she was about 16 or 17, he asked her to marry him. When Serena found out, she became enraged and attacked Olivia, who accidentally kicked her into a wall in self-defense. Olivia managed to avoid jail thanks to intervention from then-law student Simone Bryce, who would later become a famed advocate for children. ("Wanderlust", "Intoxicated")
