Detective Cyrus Lupo worked for the NYPD's Manhattan North Homicide Squad with the rank of Senior Detective. He was formerly partnered with Detective Kevin Bernard.

Biography[]

Early in his career, Lupo was a patrolman in the 27th Precinct. (L&O: "Called Home") One Christmas morning, he visited a crime scene in which a father murdered his wife and two children. This bloody crime scene left him with PTSD, and he began drinking to deal with the trauma. While he was abusing alcohol, he appeared in court to testify against the father, and the defense lawyer discovered that he was under the influence while testifying on the stand. Lupo continued drinking until he fell asleep in a patrol car while hung over on the job. Lupo's partner went to a bodega to get him a cup of coffee and was killed during an armed robbery there. Wracked with guilt, Lupo quit drinking and saw a therapist for nine months. (L&O: "Steel-Eyed Death")

Lupo later spent four years as a member of the NYPD Intelligence Division, investigating terrorist groups overseas in Iraq, Pakistan, and Morocco. While on this assignment, Lupo often worked alone, without backup and unarmed.

Lupo eventually returned to the 27th as a result of his brother Tom's assisted suicide and was partnered with Detective Ed Green. He was revealed to have been romantically involved with his sister-in-law Jenny prior to her marriage to his brother. Lupo got involved in the case, and by its resolution, he watched a tape of his brother killing himself, learning that Tom was in a lot of pain and only had six months left to live. (L&O: "Called Home")

Eventually, he was promoted to senior partner, and Kevin Bernard was assigned as his partner.

Lupo is versed in the Bible, identifying a quote as from Romans. He is currently learning Spanish and is enrolled at Brooklyn Law School taking night school.

The fact that he was in law school is used against him when he obtained evidence illegally during a case, and as a law student, he should have known better. This left EADA Cutter furious with him, but after he and Bernard saved Cutter's life when the defendant tried to murder him, Cutter gained a new appreciation for him. (L&O: "By Perjury")

While investigating the death of MLI Daisy Chao, he gets romantically involved with Emma Kim, who reports being attacked in a similar fashion. She later turns out to be a con artist and a murderer; Lupo nearly ruins the case as a result. (L&O: "Just a Girl in the World")

By 2022, Lupo was no longer working in the 27th, and Bernard went through a few partners before finally being assigned to Frank Cosgrove. (L&O: "The Right Thing")
