Elliot Stabler

Detective Elliot Stabler is the partner of Olivia Benson.

Elliott was born in 1961. Stabler comes from an Irish-American family with three brothers and two sisters. His father Tom was also a police officer who lost his pension shortly before his retirement. Stabler had a difficult relationship with his parents; his father was physically abusive at times, while his mother Bernadette was bipolar (a condition that Elliot himself may have inherited and passed on to his second oldest daughter, Kathleen). Stabler served in the U.S. Marines and has a USMC tattoo of an eagle, globe and anchor on his forearm. He attended Queens College, where he earned his B.A.

Stabler is a detective with Manhattan's 16th Precinct, also known as the Special Victims Unit, which investigates sex crimes. He is dedicated to his job, but this dedication occasionally turns into obsession, as he often takes cases personally, affecting his judgment. Nonetheless, Stabler has a 97 percent case closure rate. (SVU: "Haystack") He lives in Glen Oaks, Queens with his family. His wife is named Kathy; they have been married since 1981, they have five children: Maureen (born 1984), Kathleen (born 1989), twins Elizabeth and Dickie (born 1992), and Elliot Jr. (born 2007).
