Maria Barragon is a refugee at the youth shelter Haven House and rape victim of the director, Jack Powell. She was threatened with being thrown out of the shelter if she told, and bribed with easier chores in clerking for him than upkeep around the shelter. Maria was afraid of vagrancy again after having been trafficked for years on the streets to survive.

Maria was questioned by Sister Bettina about her privileges, so she falsely accused her of sexually assaulting Maggie Corson and harassing Maria herself to silence her. Maggie fled the shelter and pulled a loaded gun in a restaurant to nearly kill herself. Maria eventually told the truth, and Powell was charged and eventually convicted of raping her under duress and threat. (L&O: “Sisters of Mercy”)
