The Federal Republic of Nigeria is a country in West Africa. A former British colony, it has emerged in the 21st Century as the fastest-growing economy in the world. With a population of over 140 million, it is the most populous country in Africa and the eight most populous country in the world. The Nigerian Constitution is based on the United States Constitution.
The country's recent history has been marred with violence. Years of corruption in the post-Colonial government led to a military coup by General Mohammadu Buhari in 1984. Buhari was in turn overthrown in 1985 by General Ibrahim Babadinga. After the cancellation of a democratic presidential election in 1992, which was acclaimed to the freest and fairest in the country's history, Babadinga handed over power to an unstable interim government which was later overthrown in 1993 by General Sani Abacha, who held power until his death in 1998. In Law & Order lore, this six-year period was probably when Amina Asante fled to America. She settled in New York City, getting cleaning jobs, but was raped by Gabriel Duvall in the early years of the new millennium. (SVU: "Night")
The current government, presided over by Muhammadu Buhari, is much more stable, but corruption is still a problem. This corruption has enabled a considerable slave trade run by people like Martin Bosa. It was through this slave trade that young Na'imah Haruna and her brother were sent to New York City. Na'imah was relatively lucky, becoming indentured to a wealthy old woman named Marion Laymon. Her brother, on the other hand, was sold to Allan Shaye, a pedophile who sexually abused him and then killed him.
There have been some folks trying to stop this trade. The ambassador to the US, Kema Mabuda, helped the Special Victims Unit to locate Bosa, and he was arrested and deported back to Nigeria, where he faces the death penalty. (SVU: "Ritual")
Nigeria has suffered many attacks from Islamic terrorism, most notably the mass abduction of over 300 schoolgirls by Boko Haram.
