Plot[]

Fin works on a case in which a college student, Ming Hao, is discovered beaten and raped. Fin's son, Ken (who is a resident advisor) convinces Ming to press charges, but her resistance makes the case difficult. The case takes a twist when another woman is attacked and Fin crosses paths with Brooklyn SVU detective Chester Lake, who is investigating a serial rapist whose M.O. matches that of Ming Hao's attacker. They work together to find the rapist before he strikes again.

Quotes[]

Ming Hao: When I got off the subway, the platform was empty. [a shot of Fin, then showing Ken by her, listening to her story; Ming sniffs] I was headed for the stairs, and all of a sudden a man grabbed me.
Tutuola: [quietly] Take your time.
Ming Hao: He dragged me behind a pillar. [shudderingly gasps] He bent me down. He put his hand over my mouth.
Tutuola: Did you get a look at him.
Ming Hao: Only for a second. He had a bandana around his face. I closed my eyes.
Ken Randall: What did he do?
Ming Hao: He made me tell him I liked it while he did it to me. [shudderingly gasps] Then he started choking me.
Tutuola: What happened next?
Ming Hao: I heard shouting. People yelling "stop." He got up and ran away.
Tutuola: Did you see who was shouting?
Ming Hao: No; when I opened my eyes, everyone was gone.
[Ken looks back at his father, slightly shaking his head]
Ken Randall: They must've chased him.
Tutuola: [sincerely] You're doin' good, okay? This is gonna help us catch the guy that hurt you.
Ming Hao: I don't wanna go to court; my parents will find out.
Ken Randall: It's okay, Ming. You're not the first girl at Hudson to get raped.
Ming Hao: [getting up] I knew I shouldn't have come here. I can't do this.
[Ken looks back desperately at his father]
Ken Randall: I blew it.
Tutuola: [without emotion] Fix it.
[Ken gets up quickly and exits after Ming; Fin sits, somewhat affected]

Ken: [walks into S.V.U] Dad. I couldn't convince Ming to come back. [comes to desk and puts hands on the desk to support his weight] What do we do now?
Tutuola: Tutuola: There's not much else we can do.
Ken: So, what, you just forget about her?
Tutuola: I can't force her to make a report if she doesn't want to.
Ken: She's in shock!
Tutuola: Look, Ken. [sighs quietly] Going through a rape kit, testimony, cross-examination can be hard. Some women just wanna move on.
Ken: Please, Dad. I-I said the wrong thing and scared her off; I gotta make this right!
[Fin looks away]

[Fin walks in hallway; Olivia comes from another hallway and meets with him and they walk quickly together]
Benson: I saw Ken downstairs.
Tutuola: He tell you how he screwed up?
Benson: Aw, he seemed pretty upset.
Tutuola: Well, he should be.
Benson: Look, he was trying to help. You can talk to her.
Tutuola: The girl's a stone; we don't have time to squeeze blood.
Benson: So you're not gonna do anything?
[stops and Fin turns around to talk]
Tutuola: Ming's the one throwing up the roadblocks.
Benson: So, go around her. Look, take a crack at this. For your son.
Tutuola: [quietly, nods slightly] I'll check the overnights to see if anybody who saw Ming being attacked called 911.

Uni D'Avella: Yeah, they called it in alright.
Tutuola: Why didn't you file a 61?
Uni D'Avella: I didn't believe those two crazies. No victim; no evidence of a crime.
Tutuola: What, you moonlighting as a crime scene tech now?
Uni D'Avella: You wouldn't've filed a report, either. The perp they described looked like the Unabomber. And I haven't heard anything on the news that he escaped.
Tutuola: Okay; I need the names of the witnesses.
Uni D'Avella: I didn't write 'em down.
Tutuola: Well, I'm definitely gonna write yours down.
Uni D'Avella: Look, their eyes were bloodshot; they were stoned out of their gourds.
Tutuola: [mad] That doesn't mean they couldn't help.
Uni D'Avella: The way they were dressed, they were the ones who needed help.
Tutuola: What do you mean?
Uni D'Avella: His face was painted; she had black feathers all over her, like they came straight out of the nuthouse. Claimed they got off work at some restaurant.
Tutuola: Do ya remember the name of the joint?
Uni D'Avella: Uh, Joe's? Moe's? Poe's? Somethin' like that.

Ken Randall: Dad, what's up with Ming's case? Her folks are packing up her things and moving her back home.
Tutuola: Maybe they just want her on a tight leash.
Ken: Tight? Try medieval.

Benson: It's called running out of options.

Chester Lake: [incredulous] I should take career advice from you?
Tutuola: [turns, angry] What's that supposed to mean?
Chester Lake: I did my homework before I showed up. Stabler and Benson get gold stars in Cragen's class. Where does that leave you?
Tutuola: I'd like to answer that question outside.
Chester Lake: I'm sure you would, friend. But that would be even dumber than ignoring me. You don't like me, fine. But you know there's a connection between my bodies and your victims.
Tutuola: [pause] We don't find a link in 48 hours, you solve your cases and I'll solve mine.
Chester Lake: [nods] Done.
Tutuola: Try to keep up.
[Chester smiles and follows him]

Lake: Been to Brooklyn lately?
Kara Bawson: No. I've been too busy setting up the new exhibit to go anywhere but the gallery.
Tutuola: How about Hudson University? You spend any time on campus?
Kara Bawson: No, but I used to date a guy who got his MBA there.
Tutuola: Y'recognize her?
[holds picture of raped college student]
Kara Bawson: No. Why?
Lake: She was attacked by the same guy who raped you.
Tom Bawson: [enters] Sweetie, you ready to go?
Kara Bawson: Not yet, Dad. These are police officers.
Tom Bawson: Honey, you wanna go upstairs and finish packing?
[He gently leads her into a hug and she stoically leaves the scene as he looks back at her]
Lake: She's taking a trip?
Tom Bawson: After what she's been through, Kara needs to get away and rest.
Lake: Your daughter's a victim of a rape. We need her here until we finish our investigation.
Tom Bawson: Our numbers in Italy. Call if you have something.
[turns to leave, Fin and Lake follow him]
Tutuola: You're not helping by yanking her out of the country.
Tom Bawson: The press is all over this case.
Tutuola: They can't print her name.
Tom Bawson: Everyone knows she works in that gallery! We're trying to protect her from rumors.
Lake: We will call your daughter. I think she's connected to some of my cases in Brooklyn.
Tom Bawson: This bastard has raped other women?
Tutuola: An Asian-American college student was attacked a couple of days ago.
Tom Bawson: Asian-American? Start with Oliver Mitsakos.
Tutuola: Who's that?
Tom Bawson: Kara's ex-fiance. My squash partner runs the hedge fund where Oliver works. He told me this little jerk has a thing for young Asian hookers.

Lake: Hey, you Oliver Mitsakos?
Oliver Mitsakos: Who wants t'know?
Tutuola: [walks over on the other side of Mitsakos] Southeast Asian Sex Tourism Board. Congratulations; you won a free cruise to Thailand!
[Oliver gets up and chortles; looks at the two men, grinning]
Oliver Mitsakos: Am I getting punk'd? Did Andy and Amber put you up to this?
Tutuola: I'm not Andy and that's not Amber. [shows badge] You're about to be hating life.
[Oliver begins walking away, smiling, and Fin and Lake follow to a discreet area of the office]
Lake: What the hell? You getting your massages with a happy ending? Huh? We hear you like 'em Asian and underage.
Oliver Mitsakos: You meet a girl, you ask for her birth certificate?
Tutuola: Where were you last night?
Oliver Mitsakos: Home watching the Knicks lose.
Tutuola: You know her?
[shows Ming's photo]
Oliver Mitsakos: Never seen her before in my life. Now if you'll excuse me, I gotta handle more money in ten minutes than you'll see in a lifetime.
[puts head slightly down and walks away]
Lake: My gut says he's lying.
Tutuola: Your gut's a genius.
Lake: All we need is Ming to ID him.
Tutuola: That's gonna be a problem.

Tutuola: We can't call her house and her cell phone's disconnected.
Lake: And the only time we can see her is when she's at school.
Ken: That'll be tough; her father's always with her, watching her like a hawk.
Tutuola: Well, if he sees us, we're facing a lawsuit.
Lake: Look, can't you get us somewhere we can talk to her in private?
Ken: She's in class right now. I'll go in, say the dean wants to see her.

Ming Hao: I can't talk to them. [walks away]
Ken: Please; they have a lead.
Ming Hao: [still walking quickly] My father's waiting for me. Leave me alone.
Ken: Another girl was attacked.
Tutuola: Just look at the picture.
Ming Hao: [turns and looks] I know him. That's Oliver Mitsakos. He was a T.A. for Intro to Econ my freshman year.
Lake: [Fin and Lake exchange multiple glances] You have any contact with him outside the classroom?
Ming Hao: He tried to make me come to his office hours, but I wouldn't.
Tutuola: Why not?
Ming Hao: He always flirted, but he was aggressive about it.
Lake: Was he ever physical or violent?
Ming Hao: It wasn't like that. Just... really desperate. [shakes head slightly] It creeped me out. [face shows realization; slightly raises her voice] Do you think he did this to me?

Oliver Mitsakos: I would never rape anyone; you gotta believe me.
Tutuola: Why? You lied about knowing Ming.
Mitsakos: She was in my class 3 years ago; she barely spoke; I barely remember her!
Tutuola: She remembers you. "Come to my office for a little one on one tutoring."
Mitsakos: I never said that!
Lake: Well, what did you say?
Mitsakos: I - I told her that she needed extra help because her papers were poorly written.
Tutuola: [puts him in the chair] You're still lyin', kid; you flirted with her every day!
Lake: [behind Oliver] You were aggressive.
Tutuola: And desperate.
Oliver Mitsakos: That was a long time ago.
Lake: [leans in front of Oliver on his hands] Old wounds still burn. So you went back and raped all the women who've rejected you.
Oliver Mitsakos: [frustrated] No!
Lake: Anna.
[slams picture on table]
She dump you? Maya.
[slams her picture on the table]
Break your heart? Rose.
[slams picture on table]
Blow you off? Is that why you raped and murdered them?
Mitsakos: I don't know those people!
Lake: [sits and cocks head] Let me tell you about them. You thought they were all Brooklyn trash. Nothin' but warm-ups for your ultimate target. Kara Bawson, your ex-fiance.
Mitsakos: [laughs and smiles with mirth] You're crazy.
Tutuola: Naw; you lost your meal ticket and your chance of getting rich quick.
Lake: You wanted revenge.
Mitsakos: [leans forward] I didn't do anything. I swear.
Stabler: [knock on door; Elliot enters] Fin. Moment?
[turns and exits so Fin can follow him]
You just got an emergency call, urgent.
[Chester comes out]
Tutuola: You can talk. That's Chet Lake, Brooklyn SVU.
Lake: Chester.
[shakes Elliot's hand]
Stabler: Elliot. [sighs] You got the wrong guy. Your perp just hit again. Victim's in the E.R. at Mercy. Name's Edie Rimpo.

Tutuola: Well, you pull that off, Casey, I'll give you my badge.
Lake: [steps up to Casey] And I'm buying dinner.
Novak: [smiles] I'm not a cheap date.
Lake: I'll remember that.

Tutuola: [to a nurse] Dr. Chanoor ever bother you?
Nurse: You kidding? I'd slice his nuts off with a scalpel.

Henry Chanoor: I'm going to visit a friend in Montreal.
Tutuola: Yeah, and I'm Dudley Do-Right.

Tutuola: The sketch ran next to Kara's photo, that's how he picked her. Fame turned him on.
Cragen: Everybody wants their fifteen minutes.

[when Henry Chanoor is about to kill a man]
Lake: You really want to have fame? Take me.

Background information and notes[]

  • This is the first appearance of Adam Beach as Detective Chester Lake. He returns in the episode "Screwed" and later became a series regular in the next season.
  • While it is never mentioned outright that Lake is of American Indian ancestry, there is a nice subtle clue in his telling Fin about his father, who helped build the great skyscrapers of New York. After World War II, many Native Americans found work as "high iron" workers in cities all over the United States. Many construction foremen praised their bravery, stoicism and dedication to performing the most difficult tasks at the highest levels.
  • In the last scene when Fin shoots the suspect in the arm he has a clear wound, but few frames later when the cops and the reporters are there, the wound isn't visible.
  • At one point when Lake and Fin are reviewing the cases, Lake refers to Anna Fischner as Amy Fischner.
  • The use of Edgar Allan Poe for the themed restaurant reflects the many Poe references made in Homicide: Life on the Street, which was set in the same world as SVU and in which Richard Belzer was a regular.
  • Kelli Giddish, the actress who plays Det. Amanda Rollins since season 13, appeared first in this episode as rape victim Kara Bawson.
  • Kal Penn, who plays Henry Chanoor, is best known for playing Kumar Patel in the Harold & Kumar movies. Coincidentally, Christopher Meloni, who plays Stabler on the show, appeared in two of the Harold and Kumar movies as two different characters. In White Castle, he appeared as a guy named Freakshow, a religious tow truck driver who helps fix the duo's car, and in Escape from Guantanamo Bay, he played a white supremacist who tries to attack the duo.
