R. Lee Ermey (born Ronald Lee Ermey) was an actor who guest starred on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as Walter Burlock in the Season 12 episode "Trophy".
He was probably best known for his role as Sergeant Hartman on Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket with Matthew Modine, Adam Baldwin, and Vincent D'Onofrio.
Ermey was often typecast in authority figure roles, such as Mayor Tilman in the film Mississippi Burning, Bill Bowerman in Prefontaine, Sheriff Hoyt in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, Jimmy Lee Farnsworth in Fletch Lives (with Chevy Chase), a police captain in Se7en, and John House in House (with Robert Sean Leonard).
In animation, he voiced the plastic army men leader Sarge in the first three Toy Story films. He also voiced Lt. "Tice" Ryan in Rocket Power, a prison warden in an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants called "The Inmates of Summer", a bunny in Father of the Pride (with Orlando Jones and Wendie Malick), and General Tsin in Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness (with Lucy Liu, James Hong, Wayne Knight, Alfred Molina, Christopher McDonald, Malcolm McDowell, Wallace Shawn, and Wendie Malick).
On television, Ermey hosted two programs on the History Channel: Mail Call, in which he answered viewers' questions about various military issues both modern and historic; and Lock n' Load with R. Lee Ermey, which concerned the development of different types of weapons. He also hosted GunnyTime on the Outdoor Channel.
Ermey married his wife, Nila, in 1975. They had four children. Ermey died at a hospital in Santa Monica, California, from complications related to pneumonia on the morning of April 15, 2018, three weeks after his 74th birthday. His funeral was held in Arlington National Cemetery on Friday, January 18, 2019, where his ashes are buried.
