Summary[]

Detective Rollins finds herself in the middle of a he-said she-said rape case.

Plot[]

Benson and Cassidy throw a fancy dinner party to announce two exciting pieces of news: Benson will soon be Sergeant Benson, and Cassidy will soon be a detective. Noticeably absent from the table is Rollins, who's across town in an AA meeting to support her friend Lena Olson's one year of sobriety.

Rollins, Lena, their mutual sponsor Nate Davis, and fellow AA member Gene Fierstein grab dinner after the meeting. Against their better judgment, Rollins and Nate hook up yet again -- but before things get really heated, Rollins answers her door to a hysterical Lena. Lena discloses that Gene raped her after dinner.

Both had too much to drink, and had a consensual quickie, but he came back afterwards to degrade her. Shaking, she describes being forced to take off her clothes and crawl on all fours, although Lena begged him to stop. Rollins assures her that it's rape, and that Gene can be prosecuted.

Rollins helps Lena press charges against Gene, who is an attorney. But Lena's history with Gene, and her proclivity for rough sex, make the he-said/she-said investigation too difficult to pursue. When Gene gets killed, a dangerous love triangle is discovered, and Rollins is forced to confess her private life on the stand.

At the end of the episode, Rollins has reverted to her destructive behavior, gambling in an illegal casino.

Quotes[]

Dr. Warner: [to SVU team] So, it turns out, that she's a lesbian and he's transgender, and the murder weapon was lodged in his anal canal. [laughing']]

Benson: Unlike the rest of us, Rollins was actually working last night.

Tutuola: Who's Nate?
Rollins: My sponsor.
Tutuola: In A.A.? I thought you were in G.A.
Rollins: I am. He's a double winner.
Tutuola: I also heard you weren't supposed to have a male sponsor. Lena said you left the bar with him.
Rollins: Yeah. He owns it.
Tutuola: And he's in A.A.?
Rollins: I'm a big girl, Fin.

[Fin and Rollins are investigating the death of Gene Fierstein]
Dr. Warner: After sex, most men feel the urge to urinate, which clears the urethra. He didn't get the chance. And the amount of fluid is consistent with his having ejaculated very recently.
Tutuola: Melinda, English?
Dr. Warner: He came, and then he went.

Rollins: [to Amaro as she goes into the break room] You went undercover to an A. A. meeting...
Amaro: You don't know this guy.
Rollins: Spying on my life!
Amaro: Calm down.
Rollins: Calm down? Really? Does that work with Maria?
Amaro: Rollins, look. I went out with some of the other guys from the group. All right, they said Nate preys on women new to the program. They call him a "13th-stepper".
Rollins: Yeah, I know what a 13th-stepper is. It's not him.
Amaro: So it's one of the other 12 steps to sleep with your sponsee?
Rollins: You know what your problem is?
Amaro: What's that?
Rollins: Maria left, you're alone and you can't stand to see anybody else happy.
Amaro: You know, you don't seem happy to me.
Rollins: I don't wanna take your inventory, but you're jealous, Nick. You're jealous, Nick. You are jealous of Olivia & Brian, Olivia & Barba, even Cragen. I mean, you are so addicted to your own misery. I'd recommend help, but they don't have a 12-step program for self-pity.
Fin: [walks in the break room] Both you guys need to stop. The whole squad room can hear you.
Rollins: [to Amaro] You're not my father. [to Fin] Neither are you. [storms out of the room]

Benson: Amanda, I've been where you are, okay? Certain victims, they push buttons. Okay, you get caught up, you lose perspective.
Rollins: This isn't about my sister.
Benson: You went through a lot with her. Have you talked to anyone about it?
Rollins: Yeah, actually in meetings.
Benson: I meant a therapist.
Rollins: I don't have to pay for someone to listen to my problems.
[walks away]

Background information and Notes[]

  • Fin mentions Jose Silva's attempt to rape someone in the season thirteen episode "Father's Shadow".
  • In this episode, Olivia Benson is said to have taken and passed the Sergeant's Exam after getting the paper work from Cragen in the episode "Wonderland Story".
  • Brian Cassidy is once again a detective now working for Internal Affairs Bureau. He got promoted back to detective after helping IAB during the episode "Internal Affairs".
  • Benson mentioned to Cassidy that she wanted throw a housewarming party in "Dissonant Voices". They have a dinner with friends and coworkers in the open of this episode.
  • It is possible that this episode is based on the Jodi Arias case. Jodi Arias was convicted of First Degree Murder in the death of Travis Alexander, and was almost sentenced to death, but 1 juror held out, so instead, she was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
  • The character Gene makes a reference to "all that Twenty-Five Acts stuff," referring to a BDSM book series, based on the real-life Fifty Shades of Grey series, that was the focus of a season fourteen episode.
