Quotes[]

Sid Gabbert: Are you a dancer?
Benson: No, Sid. I'm a detective, remember?
Sid Gabbert: Oh... You're pretty enough to be a dancer.
Benson: Thank you, Sid.
Sid Gabbert: [looks at Elliot, cross-eyed] You're not.
Stabler: That's the cross I bear.

Ellen Van Kuren: When Henry was 4, he walked into the living room in his cousin's tutu and announced he was a girl.
Stabler: Lot of boys go through dress up phases, my oldest boy used to wear his mom's high heels.
Ellen Van Kuren: Did your son try cutting off his penis with a nail clipper and scream God made a mistake?

[Hailey Van Kuren]
Ellen Van Kuren: When she was 10 she drank bleach and she almost died. I realized then if I didn't let her be herself, I'd lose her completely.

Stabler: Where'd you get the black eye?
Ellen Van Kuren: Hailey... hit me. Monday night she was climbing in the window at 2 in the morning, I demanded to know where she was, we had an argument, and she punched me.
Benson: Monday night was when Mark was attacked.
Ellen Van Kuren: Oh... oh my God.

Benson: Your father was attacked Monday night.
Hailey Van Kuren: Is he dead?
Benson: No, he's going to be fine.
Hailey Van Kuren: Too bad.

Benson: Who were you out with Monday night?
Hailey Van Kuren: Just a boy.
Ellen Van Kuren: A boy? Hailey, you're gay?
Hailey Van Kuren: You still don't get it, mom, I'm a GIRL! I'm SUPPOSED to be with boys.

Stabler: [to Blake about Children of Ariel] So you steal from the rich pharmaceutical companies and give to the poor transsexuals? You're kinda like Robin Hood and Maid Marion all rolled into one, huh?

Benson: Hailey... you're bleeding
Hailey Van Kuren: It's nothing.
Benson: Sit down, honey. Sit down.
Hailey Van Kuren: I'm fine.
[Benson rolls up Hailey's sleeve, revealing her forearm covered in blood.]
Benson: Somebody call a bus!
Hailey Van Kuren: I feel cold...

Stabler: He can't let Henry go.
Hailey Van Kuren: Henry's been gone a long time. It's like he loves a ghost. It's not me.

Hailey Van Kuren: What would you have done? If your son came home in a dress, would you still love him?
Stabler: I'd try to understand him. It wouldn't be easy. I'd probably make a lot of mistakes. I wouldn't stop loving him.

Jackie Blaine: I always knew I was a girl, but things were different back then: there were no pills, no counselors, no support groups, you... you had to live as a woman for THREE years before a doctor would even consider doing the surgery. It was hard, but I had no choice. I was leaving a bar and three men grabbed me. They called me a freak. They dragged me into a vacant lot and they pulled up my skirt. One of them pulled out a knife and said 'If you want to be a woman so badly, I'll make you one', then he cut me!

Greylek: Are you going to give me the "SVU is gray" speech?

Background information and notes[]

  • Goof: In one scene Stabler refers the Hayley as "Chelsea".
  • Goof: In one scene, Haley's pendant can be read as "Stephanie".
  • At 41:10 the judge says "...I hereby sentence you to eight years." Any real judge would know that isn't a sufficient sentence, as they must also declare which specific type of punishment or incarceration the defendant is being sentenced to - jail, prison, probation, house arrest, a psychiatric facility, community service, etc...
  • Another episode that features a father struggling to accept a transgender child is the episode "A Better Person".
