The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a communist state in Southeast Asia.

Formerly a colony of France, the Empire of Japan occupied Vietnam after France was conquered by Germany in World War II.

From 1945 to 1975, Vietnam was divided between communist Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) and the democratic Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). In 1959, North Vietnam started a war to conquer the South. The South was defended by the United States until the casualties of the Vietnam War caused the American public to protest the war, including Jack McCoy. Eventually, the United States abandoned the war in 1973. In 1975, the south fell to the north and all of Vietnam was transformed to communism. The Vietnam War was the only war the United States did not win, while simultaneously not losing either.
